Breast Awareness - getting to know what is normal for youINDEX

The Breast Awareness approach to the early detection of breast cancer encourages women of all ages to be familiar with the normal look and feel of their breasts. It is considered to be a 'wellness approach' and is different to breast self-examination (BSE), although similar in many ways.
Breast Awareness encourages breast familiarity as part of a general body awareness and health care. If women are familiar with what is normal for them, they may be better able to recognise an abnormal change. Breast Awareness differs from BSE in that no specific technique, or regularity, is promoted.
Breast self-examination is a monthly, systematic examiniation of the breasts that follows a set routine. It has been promoted to women since the 1950s but in recent years has come under much scrutiny. Research from around the world has not shown BSE to be effective in reducing deaths from breast cancer. In 1999 the National Breast Cancer Centre published a review of all available literature on the effectiveness of BSE. It found that there is currently insufficient evidence to encourage or discourage the practice of a systematic approach to BSE to reduce deaths from breast cancer. The World Health Organisation, through its International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC 2002) found that there was inadequate evidence that breast self-examination can reduce mortality from breast cancer. To add to this, a large, 10-year randomised observational study conducted in Shanghai showed no significant survival gains from the practice of BSE.
We know how important it is to find breast cancers as early as possible, this is when there are the best chances of successful treatment, increased survival and/or improved quality of life.
How can we help women to detect breast cancer early?
Firstly, for women aged 50-69, we promote screening mammography. It is currently the best, and only proven method for early detection that is likely to save lives across the population.
For women of all ages, and between mammographic screenings, we can promote the Breast Awareness messages:
* Get to know your breats and what's normal for you by looking at them and feeling them
* If you notice an unusual change, see your doctor.

The Cancer Council Victoria's Breast Awareness brochure gives women practical advice in becoming Breast Aware. To order copies call the Cancer Information and Support Service on 13 11 20.
